M.E.N.T.O.R traditionally:
Making Educational Networks That Open Roads (M.E.N.T.O.R) is a three-day, two-night program that Hermanas Unidas de UCSB hosts annually. We select twenty five students from three underrepresented high schools in California through an application process and invite them to our university.
The M.E.N.T.O.R experience includes three days of resourceful academic, financial, and admissions workshops. Our students have the opportunity to attend classes and a campus tour with Hermana volunteers. A resource fair also provides information about various organizations on campus and a panel of UCSB students with similar financial and cultural backgrounds answer all of their questions about college life. To close off the event, they are encouraged by a motivational UCSB staff speaker.
M.E.N.T.O.R 2023:
Due to the safety precautions in response to the current pandemic, M.E.N.T.O.R 2023 will be offered in person 3 days this year. With the first and second day being in person at the students school and the third day being a field trip to UCSB. The structure changes, but our goals do not! We want to provide our students with important resources, fun activities, and most importantly, the connections they need to begin their academic careers. We want to help our students create networks with other high school and current UCSB students, as well as UCSB faculty. We emphasize the importance of a higher education at a four year university immediately or after high school and equally, the importance of transfer programs at community and city colleges.
Applications for this year will be open to everyone. We will select applicants to participate in the program, but all information will be open to the public. We will work hard to keep our students engaged and motivated for the future.
